August 2, 2016

Dear Supporters,

This letter brings much better news than what I had to share 6 weeks ago! The biggest news first!

In July, all the closing papers had been signed. All the transfer requests for the 30 children were being processed. The house owners were notified. I had written you, our supporters.

Then, at the LAST MINUTE, a Christian Bolivian friend who is fluent in English and teaches Spanish and Bolivian culture to foreigners, met with our Bolivian administrative staff. She was very impressed with what she saw, and to our great surprise asked if she could take over the ministry, along with her board. For two weeks, a flurry of phone calls, emails, and consulting took place in both countries. The local administration was all for it, but I was counseled to let the closure continue. So many details to consider, and so little time! But the thought of Casa de Amor continuing its ministry AND the kids and childcare staff getting to stay motivated everyone to consider the many details and make a good decision.

To make a long story short, on the evening of July 25, papers were signed and Maria Eugenia (“Mauge”) Ureña became the new director and legal representative of the organization “Hogares de Amor para Niños” (Spanish for “Homes of Love for Children”). Savannah Sielbeck from Tennessee, a regular volunteer and supporter, and long time friend of Mauge’s, also has a role in the new administration.

How Casa de Amor is the same:

The organization “Hogares de Amor para Niños” still exists in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

15 of the children are still in CDA’s care (of the other 15: 5 older children had already been transferred to a family-style home, 4 were adopted, and 6 little ones entered a program that ensures adoptions)

Almost all of the staff we hired remain.

The children will live in our biggest house until year’s end.

How Casa de Amor has changed:

In English, the home will now be known as “The Sunshine House”

I (Jennifer) will no longer be involved in day-to-day finances, decisions of the home, or communication. My family needs me in this season of life!

Our Bolivian board of directors has resigned and the GOAL board will also cease

Rosa, our local director and my “right hand” since Day One in 2004, and David, our administrator (a valued employee since 2009), have resigned so that Mauge and board can take over at lower costs.

Our US based non-profit “GOAL” will no longer process donations. If you desire to continue supporting this vital ministry to the children of Bolivia, please see the important information below.

This sudden change of events had several immediate positive effects.

Of course it was exciting that the rest of the children, staff, and vehicle could all stay! But after months of financial stress, we also needed less money because we did not feel the full weight of the closing costs, such as paying 3 months salary to the staff who hadn’t resigned by the last day of work.

Several times in the last letter, I emphasized our desire to finish strong with a good testimony. Thanks to the generosity of many amazing supporters and the transition just explained, that’s exactly what happened. We met our obligations with the staff according to a strict employee law, and paid everyone what they were owed. It was shocking last week to get to say on the blog, “Okay, we’re good!!” Be assured that the funds which arrived over our immediate needs will now go towards care of children—a much better prospect than closing costs!

The new administration has excitedly jumped in, grateful for meticulous book-keeping, properly kept files, esteemed reputation in social services, and a well-organized structure from which to operate.
Let’s pray for their success, for God’s glory, and the children’s complete well-being!

Thank you to all who gave so quickly and generously to meet the urgent need.

Dios Les Bendiga! It’s been an amazing ride!

Our immediate needs have all been MET, praise the Lord!! I can't tell you how amazing it is to say that, and to not owe on basic expenses for the first time in a very long time.

And yes, there IS exciting news to share about Casa de Amor! Over the next week I'll be composing the letter to explain what has transpired and how we now stand. (For those not on the mailing list - don't worry! I'll post it here.)

I'm sorry that I can't be more specific right now, but I need time to write something that will do it all justice. Patience, please!

Just know that for now, after some very dark months, we have come to the best conclusion we could have imagined with the issues we faced.

It is such a relief to have all the big decisions made and our urgent needs met!

PS - Prayerfully consider continuing to support the children where they are now, especially if you are a child sponsor. More information on that will come in the next letter!

This is the most amazing week we have had since 2015 end-of-year giving. THANK YOU everyone for your generosity!! We were also touched by the encouraging, uplifting notes that are arriving with the donations. I haven't seen these people (many from Texas) in several years or even more, but they are responding generously to needs.

Here is an update:

The June letter explained that we need $40,000 by the end of July AND for our mini-bus to sell.

The bus has been taken to market a couple of times but there has not been an adequate offer, so this is still in process.

However, as of this last wonderful week, we have received $30,858 to our mailbox and paypal since the mailing of the letter!!

The discouraging part is it seems the childcare and support staff (minus administration) are not going to resign from their jobs. This signifies that we owe them THREE months of salaries when we end their contract - another difficult aspect of Bolivian workers law. This will add $14,550 to the previously estimated closing costs.

So it's clear that we are seeing progress but still have a mountain to climb!

Also encouraging is the support we are seeing from friends in Cochabamba who are part of the children-at-risk ministry community. People are pulling together to see that our kids have a great new home, and that's wonderful news!

Stay tuned!!
We’ve administered three children’s homes, 24/7, for 11 ½ years. Since the economic downturn in 2008, however, we rarely have a large bank account balance, but money would come just in time to cover necessities. International adoptions also nearly ceased, and three of our biggest supporting churches stopped giving for internal reasons beyond our control. Still God provided.

As much as we would love to show their beautiful faces, for the privacy of the children we are no longer allowed to post pictures online.**

Several weeks ago with the help of several wonderful volunteers – the outdoor play-sets from the old baby home were finally transferred to the newer baby home!

The outdoor play-sets have always been a favorite place to play for our kids! They have brought life to the homes, and allowed the kids to be creative, and enjoy long mornings playing outside! When the babies moved homes last September, the play-sets were temporarily left behind due to the work involved in moving them.

The kids continued to enjoy them when they visited volunteers, but mostly were un-used.

In May, thanks to the hard work of Tio David, Tio Franco, Tio Tadeuo, and Tia Chelsea, (and the willing help of lots of little hands) the play-sets were dis-assembled, transported, and re-assembled!

A work in progress!

The kids now have fun/ safe places to play outside, and the babies have their own play-set inside!
The babies enjoy hiding under the slide in the play-room and the toddlers love to sneak UP the slide when they think no one is watching. :)

The girls love their new swings, and would swing all day if not for their homework and chores!

The girls also enjoy playing “house” in their new fort, and it is always interesting to see. Last week I overheard Saret, one of our youngest in kindergarten, sweetly ordering her younger sisters to eat their food and not cry. Saret can be a picky eater, and is often tired at lunch time. It is not uncommon for her to end lunch time in tears- so it was amusing to hear her advice to the other girls!

We are so thankful that the kids are able to spend time playing as KIDS! Thank you for your prayers!
This week I was chatting with a longtime supporter of Casa

Like the majority of children, the kids at Casa de Amor LOVE homework. Ha!
Like most children, homework time is not the highlight of the day for kids at Casa de Amor. However, it is a time when the children receive special individual attention. Because school is half-day in Bolivia, the children often arrive home with 1-3 hours of homework. (Depending on the concentration of the child) Several of the children struggle with learning abilities and attention difficulties, and this often makes homework time even more difficult.

Due to our wonderful long-term volunteers, and local volunteers, lately, there has been no shortage of help at homework time.

After arriving home from school at lunch time, the kids change out of their uniforms and sometimes wash their overcoats and socks by hand. This is a great way for them to learn responsibility, and to prepare for the reality of life in Bolivia. Once this is taken care of, lunch is served, and we gather around the table to eat and hear about the kid’s days. (The littlest ones often fall asleep at the table!)

After lunch is finished, and dishes are done, homework time begins. The youngest kids with less homework finish first, and typically nap for an hour or so. The older kids have more homework, and sometimes work until dinner time. Although this can be a tedious time, it can also be a great opportunity to talk with the kids and hear about their days and interests and dreams.

Yesterday, I got to write simple and complex sentences with 11 year old Edgar. 45 sentences seemed like a daunting task, but I began to enjoy laughing and joking with Edgar as we worked. Edgar is very intelligent, but has had a hard childhood, and can often be trying to work with. He is the oldest of the boys, and often feels lonely. As we were writing sentences, he opened up about his friends, classmates, soccer team, and interest in World War 2.

Although homework time is not my favorite time either, I am thankful for the way God uses it as an opportunity to spend time with the children at Casa de Amor!

Children’s Day, April 12th, is a largely celebrated holiday in Bolivia. Restaurants offer special deals, hire clowns, and offer face painting. Schools give large goody baskets to children of snacks and candies. In general, it is a day for children to be spoiled, but it is also a day where the children at Casa de Amor are showered with love and attention from local churches and individuals.

Last Tuesday, I arrived at the home in the morning to find the children- and some tias- with clown face paint. A very generous group of physical therapy students had planned a special day for the little kids with games, snacks, and most importantly – lollipops! We have a ways to go in learning how to eat lollipops, but for the most part, it was a successful day! :)

Matthew 19:14 says: Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

While Children’s Day is not a specifically Christian holiday, it is a good reminder of Jesus’ love for His children, and the responsibility we as adults have in pointing them to Jesus. Please continue to pray for wisdom for decision that need to be made at Casa de Amor, and as always for God’s provision for these precious lives.
In Bolivia, (and with 31 children) there is always SOMETHING to celebrate!

This last week, on Thursday afternoon, the kids excitedly announced that they would be preforming in the school anniversary celebration in the morning. This led to an exciting turn of afternoon events!

Each class participates in a different school holiday, and Friday 8 of our school aged children participated in traditional dances. Each dance requires a specific costume, according to native dress in each region. The 4 Pre-K students were required to rent their costumes- normally a fairly simple task. However, due to a road block by local dairy farmers, this turned into an all afternoon event for our fearless volunteers.

Friday morning, we arrived to the school prepared to help and cheer on the kids in whatever way possible. The kids divided into their classes, and the volunteers and tia decided to divide and conquer! The volunteers and Tia Marcela helped the youngest with their costumes, I supervised Shyrlen as she prepared for her dance, and Franco helped keep Daniel and Benito from taking their cowboy looking costumes too seriously.

When it was time for the dances to begin, we were all busy taking pictures and making sure everyone was in the right place. The kids danced extremely well, and were happy to show off for the audience.

Enjoy a few pictures of our older kids at Casa de Amor! Until April 12th for Children's Day, and then we'll celebrate again!

Especially when there are 31 children living in semi-close quarters...

As the weather starts to change ( in Bolivia from Summer to Fall) , the children start to get coughs and colds. Although Casa de Amor does everything possible to prevent this, the normal cold is hard to beat completely.

This morning, I went to the homes with the intention of spending the morning helping the tias and playing with babies, and soon saw that was not going to happen. Three of the babies were in their nice clothes, and Tia Maria (the healthcare tia) was looking for help. Taking one sick child to the doctor is never fun, but three is nearly impossible! Volunteer Cecilie and I each grabbed a child and headed to the clinic with Tia Maria. The clinic was luckily nearly empty, and the kids were attended quickly.

The price of healthcare in Bolivia is realtively inexpensive, but the expenses do add up. The visit for each child cost 40 bolivianos, approximately $5.75, plus medicine. The nurses were very friendly, and helpful, and the babies enjoyed the extra attention... even if it doesn't show on their faces. :)

We are thankful for access to good medical care, willing volunteers, and wonderful staff committed to the care of these precious children!Danyelle Graveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09028996463529961921noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1011876784321532852.post-57887349628662502542016-03-17T10:24:00.002-04:002016-03-17T10:24:44.610-04:00Visiting Team from Denmark

J. is our second to oldest girl and child at Casa de Amor! Just a few days ago she celebrated her 12th birthday. This year she is in 6th grade and has many friends at school. She loves going to church and enjoys reading her Bible. Her sweet personality makes her a great influence on the other children! <a class="_58cn" data-ft="{"tn":"*N","type":104}" href="https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/20k20days?source=feed_text&story_id=1088021017888992" style="color: #3b5998; cursor: pointer; text-decoration: none;">#20k20days

It is our first "Surgery Saturday," and many of you are already familiar with this little boy, C. He had open heart surgery on August 3rd and has made an amazing recovery! You would never know all that he has been through in his short life. He came to us at 6 months old with a heart murmur, but about a year ago we were told that the hole hadn't closed and instead had grown larger which required open heart surgery to close it. He started pre-school this year but is having to take some time off due to his recovery. He can't wait to go back! #20k20days

In June, a wonderful team of volunteers from Orphan World Relief came to Bolivia and painted the dining room of our Boy’s Home. The bright yellow color has given life to the dining room, and makes the room feel like a home. Several of our current volunteers are very artistic, and worked together to paint a tree with hundreds of leaves. The children watched as the volunteers painted, and begged to join in painting.

As the leaves were painted, we spent time praying, and thinking about all of the people that have been involved in the children’s lives. Between mission teams, previous volunteers, child sponsors, and the many people that have prayed for the children – hundreds of people play a role in the children’s lives. An analogy began to form about the leaves on the trees, and the people the Lord has put in the life of Casa de Amor.

Over the last few months, due to surgeries, hospitalization, government mandated pay increases/ bonuses, Casa de Amor has experienced a time of trusting the Lord in our finances like never before. He has always been faithful to provide, and He has used many of YOU to do that.
We would like this mural to be a tree of remembering the Lord’s faithfulness in a tangible way. During the month of September, we would like to memorialize the Lord’s provision by “selling” the leaves, branches, and trunk of the tree. We are so thankful for your generosity to Casa de Amor, and we would love for the children to tangibly see how many people love them.

By “buying” a leaf, branch, or trunk, you will be providing for the operating costs of Casa de Amor such as rent for the children’s homes, staff salaries, and daily necessities. Leaves will be sold for $100, branches will be sold for $500, and the tree trunk will be sold for $5,000. Donations can be made on PayPal or by check, and we will then paint the name of the donor in the leaf, branch, or trunk. If you would like to make a donation on behalf of someone else, or as a church group, that is also a possibility. Mail a check to GOAL
PO Box 357
Collierville, TN 38027. Or click here for the link to PayPal https://casadeamor.publishpath.com/supporting.

Our goal is to raise $20,000 in the next 20 days. We know that the Lord is faithful to provide, and are excited to see how He will work. Each day for the next 20 days, we will post a photo and update on one of our children with a link to donate. Please feel free to share these updates with friends and family, and check back here often for the latest updates! We will also be using the hashtag #20k20days !

We serve a great, powerful, and loving God, and are so thankful for everyone of you – your generosity, prayer, and love for the children of Casa de Amor. Please join us in praying and sharing about how God is at work in Bolivia!
For those of you who have been following our financial situation, we scraped up enough money to pay the staff their portion of the July salaries on time. We still have a few more days to pay the social security portion and taxes that are required. To do this we still need another $5000 just to finish paying July's salaries. Ideally we would be able to pay August's by the end of the month and get back on track (this requires an additional $15,000 by the end of the month). God has been so faithful in always providing what we need and we know He will not fail this time. Will you please pray with us for support and creative ideas this month. If you like to keep up to date on how to pray, we will keep the thermometer updated with the current giving for August on our website casadeamor.org. We would so appreciate any help you can give!
Today celebrates the country's 190th anniversary and it is quite a celebration down here! All week there have been stands on many corners selling Bolivian flags and other items with Bolivian colors. Many of the public transportation vehicles have been decorated and houses even have flags hanging on them.
Yesterday all of the kids were out of school because many of them were marching in parades. They do this a couple of times a year and it is quite a sight! I don't think I have ever seen so many people in one place in my life! It reminded me of New Year's Eve in Times Square! I was at one of the biggest parades downtown with J and one of the Bolivian staff. It was an adventure I won't soon forget!

One of our oldest boys, E, also got to march in a parade yesterday. Unfortunately because of the timing, I wasn't able to get there to take any pictures of him. He got to carry a flag in the parade because he is one of the best students in his class!! I was so disappointed that I couldn't get there to take any pictures. I'm sure he looked so handsome marching in his uniform and proudly carrying the Bolivian flag! We are all very proud of him and how well he is doing in school!

As I type, I am currently sitting on a hospital bed with the sweetest little 4 year old boy I have ever met. K is VERY happily playing on Kirsten's iPad driving cars, building with virtual Legos, and playing peek-a-boo with animals! I know I'm a horrible babysitter, but there's only so much you can do after 4 full days in a hospital room with a seemingly, perfectly healthy little boy. To look at him and play with him, you wouldn't know that anything is wrong. But tomorrow morning (hopefully) K will have open heart surgery to repair 2 holes in the ventricular septum of his heart. This surgery was supposed to happen on Friday (as many of you already know), but it was delayed because there weren't any beds in ICU for him to go to after it was completed. We are really hoping it can happen this time. We are all getting a little tired of being cooped up in a small hospital room (especially K). He is being such a trooper though. He is happy and playing with his toys and always ready with a hug!!

Thank you all for praying for us and the surgeries this month. Unfortunately, I's surgery had to be postponed because he caught a cold and was running a fever the day he was supposed to have his. It has been postponed until October, but we are praying that it will be able to happen sooner than that. We received all of the money we needed for his surgery, so we will save that for whenever it actually happens!! Thank you so much for your donations this month!
